At William Ryan Homes Wisconsin, we pride ourselves not only on building new homes, but on building communities. We realize we can’t do that alone. In spirit of the week, and with Small Business Saturday coming up this weekend, we want to take a moment to spotlight some of the small businesses that help to make our communities so great!

Residents at West Prairie Village in Sun Prairie get the best of everything with the Beans-N-Cream. A local hot spot right on Main Street, Beans-N-Cream operates a separate bakehouse and coffee shop with each space uniquely designed for its purpose. The bakehouse features a large kitchen with the ability to churn out fresh pastries daily for the two locations while the coffee house is used to roast fresh coffee.
The business has been a community gathering point for more than 16 years, and it is the community impact that GM Matt Peters loves most about it.
“We try to give back as much as we can,” Peters said.
Giving back isn’t just a goal for Beans-N-Cream, it’s a part of the plan. When you purchase a Sunshine Blend roast, 50% of the profit is donated to charity!

Every great neighborhood needs that go-to breakfast spot. For the residents at Heritage Gardens, that spot is The DeForest Family Restaurant. This family-owned diner has been serving the DeForest area since owner Jack Amiti and his wife Kiki moved to the area in 1999.
With its famous French toast, sizzling-hot skillets and fluffy omelets, the DeForest Family Restaurant can satsify any breakfast eater. The diner also serves a robust lunch and dinner menu, but Amiti knows that breakfast is the local hot spot’s biggest hit.
“We’re busiest on the weekends during breakfast,” Amiti admitted.
The restaurant has been lifted by a loyal customer base throughout the pandemic. The loyalty hasn’t been lost on Amiti. The owner has gone out of his way to support the community through the years – volunteering his time as the Vice President of the local Lions International Club – and is appreciative to see the community support his business through these tough times.
“They’ve shown me a real respect, and I can’t thank them enough,” Amiti said.

No neighborhood is complete without a local gathering spot for its residents. Jessica Zander opened The Poppy Shop in November 2018 with the desire to fill that role for DeForest and to celebrate its local artists and vendors.
“There is a deep sense of community here,” Zander said. “It’s a great location to have ‘that place’ where people can stop, shop, and bump into their neighbors or someone they know while celebrating local makers.”
The Poppy Shop is a quaint boutique filled with locally made items you won’t find in big box stores. Because almost every item is made from local craftswomen, there are a lot of unique, one-of-a-kind items to be found throughout the store. Aside from its neighborly feel and local flare, part of its charm comes from the hunt – trying to find that perfectly unique piece each visit. While shoppers are searching, they can sip on one of the many Door County Coffee & Tea items available at the full-service coffee bar. Shoppers also encouraged to bring in their children as the family-friendly space includes a coloring table where the kids can keep themselves entertained.

This neighborhood bake shop provides tasty treats to people as far away as Chicago. But residents at Stoner Prairie don’t have to travel nearly as far for their sweet tooth fix. Located just two miles from the William Ryan Homes community, The Rolling Pin offers indelible delicacies from eclairs and cinnamon rolls to holiday themed cookies and wedding cakes. They also serve breakfast, lunch, offer a delightful array of breads, and love to add their own little flare to their items.
“We do some crazy cakes,” owner and founder, Tanya Laiter said of her designs.
Laiter, who came to Fitchburg in 2001 after spending nearly a decade as a pastry chef in North Carolina, loves everything about the area. The sentiment is shared by her customers as the bake shop remains busy constantly and sells out of their items daily.
For those who can’t make it to the bake shop early enough, there is the option to order online. And if you’re looking for a recommendation – the strawberry short cake is high on the list.

The difference between a house and a home is what is inside. For a majority of American families, that includes pets! Thanks to The Dog Sanctuary, our residents at Sussex Preserve don’t need to worry about leaving their furry friends home alone while they head off to work.
The doggy daycare has been serving the Sussex area since 2014 with Sarah Taratino taking over the operation this past January. On their busiest days, they care for roughly 30 pooches that come to play, socialize, and relax.
“The biggest thing I try to stress about us at The Dog Sanctuary WI, is that we are a family,” Taratino said. “Every single one of our dogs that come to play with us is given love and care as if they were our own. We are animal lovers through and through and nothing gives us more joy than seeing our family happy.
