At William Ryan Homes Phoenix, we pride ourselves not only on building new homes, but on building communities. We realize we can’t do that alone. In spirit of the week, and with Small Business Saturday coming up this weekend, we want to take a moment to spotlight some of the small businesses that help to make our communities so great!

Nothing brings a community together like cheering on the local sports teams. Whether it’s cheering on the local high school teams, the college teams, or the pro teams, Augie’s Sports Grill has given the residents in Goodyear a place to come together.
“It’s kind of like Cheers. There are a lot of regulars,” owner Rick Boes said.
The Michigan native opened Augies in January 2009 because he felt the area needed a local sports bar. His passion for sports, especially for the teams in his native Michigan, further fueled his desire. Turns out, he was right! Augies has received such a tremendous reaction over the years that Boes’ son John – himself a sports journalism graduate from Arizona State University – has since taken on co-ownership responsibilities.
“The loyalty we have here is a very nice feeling,” Rick said. “They support us, and we support them.”
In addition to providing the area with a place to watch the games, Augies pays it forward to the community by sponsoring multiple area softball teams and donates to the local high schools.

For millions of Americans, a house isn’t a home without our furry family members. Poshy Paws provides a wonderful sanctuary where residents at Agave Ridge at Vistancia in Peoria can pamper their pooches.
Posh Paws is owned and operated by sisters, Channon and Jaime Adams. The business not only provides pet grooming services, it also serves as a daycare where pet parents can make sure their canines are entertained while they’re at work. Owners can choose between half day (five hours) and full day options while being assured that their dogs receive a lot of play time.
“We like to send them home tired and ready for bed,” Channon Adams said.
The family-owned business is constantly growing even during the pandemic, and the sisters couldn’t be more grateful to the Peoria community that has supported them.
“It’s been a great experience here. We love Peoria,” Channon Adams said.

No neighborhood is complete without a great breakfast spot. For our residents at Agave Ridge at Vistancia in, they don’t have to look real far to find that place.
The North Peoria location of Haymaker was launched in 2013. With its warm and woody interiors, Americana décor, and all-day breakfast menu, the store was an immediate hit. Owner and operator, Joey Lucidi, has since gone to open six other area restaurants – including two more Haymakers – under the Westside Concepts umbrella. Each location offers that same vibe of bringing neighborhoods, friends, and family together.
“It’s a really fun environment,” GM Veronica Gonzales said while acknowledging the restaurant’s loyal customers. “The Peoria community is great. Through Covid, they helped keep us afloat with a lot of takeout.”
In addition to bringing communities together, Lucidi likes to give back to the community as well. Haymaker is a proud sponsor of multiple area sports teams and hosts CCV fundraisers.

For those of us who aren’t quite themselves before our morning cup of coffee, we can appreciate having a great local coffee shop right around the corner. Our residents at Broadleaf at Verrado have just that thanks to Ebb + Flow Coffee Co. Located in the heart of Buckeye, this three-year old café is owned by childhood best friends who long-held the dream to open a community-based coffee house.
“We promise to serve the freshest cup of coffee with a smile on our face,” Liz Fast said of herself and co-owner Carly Warne.
The duo can accomplish this not just because they’re living their dream, but through their mission statement of supplying superior products by partnering with businesses that use the highest-grade, eco-friendly ingredients. Their coffee and produce are locally sourced. And their pastries are baked by a Buckeye resident who can drop off orders at the store any time – guaranteeing freshness.
From a community standpoint, Fast and Warne make it a point to sponsor local recreational sports teams. They also revel in their location, which is dead center in the middle of most community events, making them a prime candidate to sponsor all local events.

Our northeastern transplants at The Palisades at Estrella don’t need to travel very far to get a taste of home thanks to Oasis Bagels. Located within the master-planned community, this Goodyear staple was founded a decade ago by New Jersey transplants who wanted to bring a small part of their native New Jersey to their new home. Philadelphia native Jerry Hassman, who has lived in the area since 1997, purchased the bagel shop in June 2020 with the intention of keeping that same spirit alive.
“The New York, hand-rolled bagels are identical,” Hassman said. “But now it’s going to a Philly spin on it.”
Despite its northeastern roots and appeal, Oasis Bagels goes above and beyond to satisfy its role as a community staple. Hassman makes sure that most items are sourced locally, including coffee blends that are roasted specifically for the store. He also lends out his space to community events, including men’s church nights and to any local politician wanting to do meet and greets with constituents. And this week, he’ll continue the store’s tradition of serving as the end point for an annual Thanksgiving Walk-A-Thon that begins at South Lake Park.
For those interested in participating in the Walk-A-Thon, well…
“I guess you can just become friends with me to join!” Hassman joked.
