Tampa Bay is literally a wonderland of stunning natural beauty with a mild climate that makes it comfortable to enjoy the great outdoors most days of the year.
Visitors travel from across the globe to experience the natural ecosystem that is the Tampa Bay Area. The unique flora and fauna found here are extremely diverse, preserved, and protected in numerous city, county and state parks that are open to the public.
These parks are dotted throughout the Tampa Bay Area from the Manatee River, Parrish, and Palmetto to the south, eastward toward Lakeland and Orlando, and north toward Wesley Chapel, Spring Hill, and Zephyrhills.
Not surprisingly, Florida is all about water. And our part of Florida on the central west coast boasts bubbling natural springs, freshwater lakes, spring-fed rivers, and the salt waters of the Gulf of Mexico and numerous bays and estuaries. They all await you for swimming, floating, paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking, power boating, fishing and nearly every other marine activity.
Three scenic rivers—Alafia, Hillsborough and Little Manatee—with tidal inlets leading out to open bay water invite endless enjoyment for all ages. It’s easy to feel one with nature when Tampa Bay is your home. A particularly crystal clear, spring fed river, the Weeki Wachee, boasts a water amusement park with stunning underwater mermaid shows. Talk about fun!
A local river favorite for canoeing and kayaking among native wildlife is the Hillsborough River State Park just north of Tampa. Yes, there are alligators and snapping turtles among other more docile creatures including an occasional manatee in the wintertime.
Super-soft sugar-white sand beaches are a trademark of the Tampa Bay area. Our sunny shorelines and clear waters draw tourists from across the country and around the world. USA Today lists the top ten beaches that are rated the best and most popular in the Tampa Bay area.
Number one on the list is Clearwater Beach, an extremely popular beach with locals and tourists alike. The views go on forever and there are watersports rentals, concessions, and cabanas with shade available. Number two on the list is Fort De Soto Park, a natural sanctuary very different from Clearwater Beach. It covers 1,000 acres of interconnected islands, sea grasses, and native wildlife and is truly a jewel among Florida beaches.
Metro area beaches can get crowded during weekends, summers, and when schools are out of session. But rest assured there are miles of pristine, secluded stretches of beach for you to enjoy if you go exploring.
Florida is certainly famous for its world famous amusement parks. Both Busch Gardens and water-themed Adventure Island are located within the Tampa city limits. Not far from them is our own Zoo Tampa with its up-close animal encounters and feeding experiences.
On the bayfront near the heart of downtown Tampa you’ll find another gem: the Florida Aquarium. It is rated among the best aquariums in the US. The super-popular-with-kids attraction, Legoland, is about 90 miles away in Orlando and features a theme park, a water park, and the world’s first Peppa Pig theme park. Of course Orlando is also home to Walt Disney World, Epcot Center, Universal Studios Florida and a multitude of other amusements for visitors all ages.
You don’t have to pay anything to have a grand old time outdoors around Tampa Bay. There are countless ways for you and your family to get outside in the fresh air and sunshine and enjoy your Florida life.
You can bicycle, hike, run or walk the many tropical nature trails maintained by the counties across the region. Stop for a restful picnic along the greenways, rivers and bays, by a public lake, or in a park by the Gulf of Mexico.
There are farmers markets, flea markets, and makers markets where you can casually stroll and shop outdoors every weekend. The Florida Botanical Gardens and the USF Botanical Gardens are gorgeous places to enjoy the extravagant natural beauty of Florida’s native plants and trees. Two other botanic wonderlands are Sunken Gardens near downtown St. Petersburg and Marie Selby Gardens in Sarasota. Although they both charge an entrance fee you’ll find it well worth the price of admission. And be sure you visit the brand new St. Petersburg Pier on the waterfront of downtown St. Pete.
Tampa has a fascinating and historic Latin Quarter near downtown called Ybor City that you simply must experience. It’s an arts and entertainment district with great window shopping, art galleries, and excellent restaurants. In fact, the famed Columbia Restaurant on 7th Avenue in Ybor City is the oldest Spanish restaurant operating in America and is a true Tampa tradition.
Ybor City was created originally as a cigar rolling community that put Tampa on the map and gave it its reputation for high quality cigar making.
There are often free music and art festivals in the downtown parks of Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Dunedin and other local cities. The annual Gasparilla Festival of the Arts and Main Sail Art Festival both draw museum-caliber artists from around the country for juried shows and cash awards.
Then there is the delightful old city of Tarpon Springs on the west coast between Lake Tarpon and St. Joseph Sound. It’s a charming and historic Greek sponge-diving village that should definitely be on your must-see list. There are numerous authentic Greek restaurants, charter boat operators for eco-tours, and interesting galleries filled with unique and artistic finds.
Whether you’re an athlete yourself or prefer spectator sports, Tampa Bay offers it all to you. In fact, you’ll find just about every outdoor activity imaginable here, including major league sports. We are home to the two-time Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers NFL football team, the wildly popular Tampa Bay Rays MLB baseball team, and the Stanley-Cup winning Tampa Bay Lightning NHL hockey team. There’s also professional soccer with the Tampa Bay Rowdies and minor league baseball to keep you entertained between regular seasons.
