Punta Gorda has a way of making weekends feel longer. You can fish off a pier before breakfast, bike a waterfront path at lunch, and catch a sunset over Charlotte Harbor at night. If you're thinking about making a move to Southwest Florida, it helps to know what daily life actually looks like. Here's our guide to the best things to do in Punta Gorda, from the waterfront to the trails to the local events that fill the calendar.

Stroll the Harborwalk and Downtown

The Harborwalk is a good place to start. This path runs about 2.5 miles along the Charlotte Harbor shoreline and ends at Fishermen's Village, passing mangroves, shops, and waterfront dining along the way. Downtown's restored historic district has galleries, boutiques, and restaurants, so it's easy to spend an afternoon wandering. If you're hungry, check out our guide to where to eat in Punta Gorda.

Don't skip the murals. The city has more than 30 of them, and they tell the story of Punta Gorda's history. You can explore on your own or join a walking tour led by the Punta Gorda Historic Mural Society.

Get Out on the Water

Charlotte Harbor and the Peace River give you plenty of ways to get outside. Anglers go after tarpon, cobia, grouper, and red drum in the harbor, while the Peace River is known for largemouth bass. You don't need a boat to join in, either. Gilchrist Park, Laishley Park, and Ponce de Leon Park all have fishing piers, and the pier at Laishley Park is 400 feet long.

Prefer to let someone else do the driving? Sunset dolphin cruises and guided kayak tours through the mangroves are popular ways to spot dolphins and manatees. Paddlers and fossil hunters also love the calm Peace River.

Spend Time in the Parks

Punta Gorda is great for families and dog owners. Laishley Park has an interactive fountain, a concert lawn, and walking paths, and it's pet-friendly. Gilchrist Park has 11 waterfront acres with a playground, picnic pavilions, and tennis and pickleball courts. Ponce de Leon Park has a mangrove boardwalk and a sandy beach that's a favorite for sunsets. It's also home to the Peace River Wildlife Center, a rehabilitation center for rescued and native wildlife.

If you like to bike or jog, Punta Gorda Pathways connects neighborhoods, parks, and shops with about 18 miles of trails.

Explore Gardens and Wildlife

The Peace River Botanical & Sculpture Gardens sit on 30 waterfront acres with five ecosystems and boardwalks that show off the sculptures. Prefer something low-key? The 19-acre Nature Park in Punta Gorda Isles is a nice spot for walking, bird watching, and photography.

Enjoy Local Arts, History, and Events

The Visual Arts Center has three galleries and offers classes for all ages, plus studios for jewelry, glass, and pottery. History fans can visit the Military Heritage Museum, and music lovers can catch the Punta Gorda Symphony.

The event calendar stays busy too. Locals look forward to the Sullivan Street Craft Festival, the Punta Gorda Seafood & Music Festival, and the holiday Lighted Boat Parade on Charlotte Harbor. The Punta Gorda Farmers Market is a good place to pick up fresh produce, baked goods, seafood, and plants. Check the market's page for current days and hours.

Day Trips Close to Home

Punta Gorda is easy to get around from. Fort Myers is about 25 miles south, and Englewood Beach is roughly 26 miles away if you want a beach day.
