Moving to Texas: A Relocation Checklist

Buying from out of state adds steps. Here's the sequence that keeps a long-distance purchase on schedule.

Relocation buyers make the same purchase as everyone else, just with less ability to drive over and look at things. Sequencing matters more.

Twelve Weeks Out

  • Get pre-qualified so you know your range before you fall in love with a plan.
  • Narrow to two or three submarkets, not eight. Commute, schools, and airport access usually decide it.
  • Request video walkthroughs of the model homes on your shortlist.

Eight Weeks Out

  • Plan one concentrated trip. Two days, four to six communities, model tours booked in advance.
  • Drive your prospective commute at the hour you'd actually drive it.
  • Confirm how your consultant handles remote selections and signatures.

Four Weeks Out

  • Lock financing and confirm your closing date against your lease or sale.
  • Schedule movers — dates go fast in summer.
  • Set up utilities in your name for the closing date, not after.
