The Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index is the industry standard by which a home’s energy efficiency is measured. The lower the HERS Index score, the lower your energy costs.

The reference home is HERS Index = 100 (2006 IECC, TX new homes built pre 2012).


A home with a HERS Index Score of 70 is 30% more energy efficient than the reference home (Typical of some new builds in TX)


A home with a HERS Index Score of 130 is 30% less energy efficient than a standard new home (Typical existing neighborhoods)

The HERS Index is now used as a universal compliance pathway for the State of Texas’ energy code (HB 3215)
